Fresh at the Market
The AFM is not just about greens and salads. Eco-Friendly Farms (which sells the meats of Polyface
Farm) offers a variety of meats and more produced in a manor they call “beyond organic” to include humane
and ethical treatment of their animals. There are no additives in their meats, and they don’t use pesticides
on their farm. For something simple, you may want to try their Spanish Sausage, or a Butifara (made with
pork) or just a plain sausage. A somewhat more specialty item, Pork Caul Fat is the net of fat from around
the stomach. You use it to wrap around other leaner meats for roasting. Their spring chickens should be
coming in about this time, and ask when their duck eggs will be available. Learn more about their farm and
farming methods by visiting their website at http://ecofriendly.com.
Smithfresh Meats, a seventh generation family farm, also offers meats and eggs raised on a 100%
organic pasture. Their beef, pork, veal and chicken are free of antibiotics and hormones. And don’t
overlook the six flavors of Ravioli offered at the market. They invite visitors to the farm to stay at
the Smithfield Farm Bed and Breakfast. Learn more at http://smithmeadows.com.
Like any of the fresh grown foods you enjoy at the AFM market, availability may vary by season, so be sure
to ask about a cut you’d like but don’t see.
