The Arlington Farmers’ Market patrons are fortunate to have Ned Atwater, owner and baker of Atwater Breads, selling his naturally leavened, all organic, hand-shaped, hearth-baked breads every Saturday. Based out of Baltimore, Ned sells his breads at farmers’ markets and restaurants throughout the area. Baked goods leftover from the market are always given to a homeless shelter.
What is available for sale changes weekly, but usually Ned will offer 10 different breads, and a selection of cookies, scones, focaccia, and specialty breads. His breads contain no fat, no sugar, no preservatives, and no dairy products, and most breads offered are sourdough-based. For those allergic to wheat or intolerant to gluten, Ned offers spelt bread. In addition, different types of focaccia are available weekly (the toppings change based on the season and what is available from the market that week). If you’re in the mood for sweeter breads, each week different varieties are offered. For example, you might find zucchini bread in the summer, eggplant and zucchini focaccia in the summer, and cranberry bread in the fall.
Be sure to pay a visit to the Atwater Breads stand the next time you’re at the market.
